Electric RC Helicopters
For beginners and indoor/outdoor fun, start of with electric powered radio control helis. These are quiet and there are rft models designed for beginners.

Look for models made by Hirobo, Kyosho, Ikarus, and Dragonfly. There are very cheap "toy" helis for young kids and "hobby quality" models that require more skill. These are for more experienced modelers. 

Nitro RC Helicopters
For realism and excitement, nothing beats the nitro powered radio control helis. Most models are designed to hover hundreds of feet above ground level and can do acrobatic maneuvers such as inverted flights.

Here the models to look for are those made by Kyosho and Raptor. Both companies are well known for producing high speed and excellent rc helicopters.
