To all F1 and mini chassis owners, please join us on Saturday Nov 21, 2009 at JPRaceway for our “F1 and Mini Shakedown Day”.
Awesome!!! That sums it up for the Nov. 21, 2009 Formula 1 and Mini “Shakedown Day”.

Despite a modest turnout of five entries for each class, the racing was close and the action was intense!!! At the end of the day, the racers clamored for more. More to come next month (pending schedule availability at JPRaceway).

Thanks first and foremost to JP for allowing us use of his excellent track, Ramil and the crew, Gerry, Mitch and especially Neil for the support, technical assistance and encouragement. Thanks also are due to Mark Flores for unselfishly volunteering his laptop, Joel Mangilit for his readiness in bringing a backup laptop. Most importantly, thanks to those who attended and were patient enough as we conducted racing while figuring out the niggles of running the amb system. Special thanks also to our guest TC participants.

Race Results:

Formula 1:

1st Ron Convento TQ; Fastest Lap of the Day 15.640 sec.
2nd Mark Flores
3rd Joel Mangilit
4th Jason dela Cruz
5th Ralph Vaggas

Mini:

1st Joseph Salcedo Fastest Lap of the Day 15.808
2nd Mark Flores TQ; Fastest lap of FWD mini for the day 17.396
3rd Jygs Tiangco
4th Ron Convento
5th Rey Parco

TC STOCK:

1st Yuichiro Takaya TQ; Fastest Lap of the Day 12.942 sec
2nd Hirano
3rd Joseph Salcedo
4th Jason dela Cruz

Commentaries:
Formula 1: As promised, open chassis, tires and motors for this class and we saw foam and rubber tires, silver can and brushless motors, etc. In the end, foam tires and silver cans still dominated. Noteworthy is the fact that GT bodies showed excellent handling potential as displayed by Mark Flores.

Mini: 4wd and FWD mixed it up and the former proved superior. A revelation was that Sport tuned and Hobbywing 13turn BL systems proved to be a very close match performance wise.

TC STOCK: TC racers practicing for the HPI Challenge in Thailand were welcomed as part of a guest class during this Shakedown Day.

Congratulations to all the participants. The smiles on all our faces proves that we were all winners yesterday.

.

Here they do a lemans start where pitcrew run to the cars, pull start the engine then start racing. There is also a driver change during the 60 minute final, driver will run down from the driver stand to tag the co-driver in.

These Kyosho cars are so realistic. There were popular bodies and models such as the Ford GT. And with such a big track racing was very realistic.

Hope you like this nostalgic video. RC racing was really the best in the 90s!

Thinking of joining a race? Let me share with you how fun and exciting racing rc cars can be.

I would recommend you practise first on your own. Best is to go to your local race track, be friends with nice and good racers, and ask them to teach you the right way to drive an rc car. It it important to practise the right technique rather than practise but doing wrong things and forming bad driving habits.

Masami Hirosaka, 14 times word champion, one of the legends in racing rc cars. Photo credit: Yokomo

What is important is to drive without crashing or bumping into other cars. As a racer, taking care of our car is number one priority. Our car is our friend, avoid damaging it by overdriving beyond your current capability

For a total beginner, I would recommend to take around 6 months of playing and practise before joining a race. Or until where you can consistently go around a track without crashing.

For your first race, join a class where the motor used is “stock” or the Mabuchi/Johnson 540 motor. This is where you can develop good racing lines and good driving technique. Plus the cars are easier to control and racing is close and exciting. Speeds are in the 15 – 25mph range.

There will come a time, once you consistently win or do well, you can then graduate to a class that uses a faster motor. Usually it is a super stock class wherein motors are in the 13.5 turn range. Speeds in the 25 – 35mph range.

Then ultimately you can join the modified class wherein speeds can be in the 40 – 60mph range. Definitely you need good hand/eye coordination and skills to race in this class.

Hope this helps as an introduction. For more info, browse the racing rc cars category of this site where I will share some tips on off-road and on-road racing, electric and nitro.

Thanks for reading. Let’s race!
