http://www.rccartips.com/ – Nitro rc cars racing and running in the 1990s. This event was covered by Radio Control Car Action magazine and was in their 1997 issue. This is the Kyosho World Cup 1997 finals won by Team Philippines.

Here they do a lemans start where pitcrew run to the cars, pull start the engine then start racing. There is also a driver change during the 60 minute final, driver will run down from the driver stand to tag the co-driver in.

These Kyosho cars are so realistic. There were popular bodies and models such as the Ford GT. And with such a big track racing was very realistic.

If you’re new to nitro rc cars, this is a good ready to run model to get you started quickly. Just remember to start out slow and drive carefully, 81kph is very fast and can cause injuries. Run only in enclosed rc tracks or secluded empty parking lots.

FW-06 Series (Good for Beginners)

Models to choose from include an Aston Martin DBR9, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, AMB-Mercedes C-Klasse DTM and a Chevrolet Corvette C6-R.

The FW-06 is fully assembled, powered by a GXR15 engine (pull start) and shaft drive 4wd transmission. Oil shocks, 2-speed automatic transmission, disk brakes, 22 ball bearings, tuned muffler, high grip rubber tires, powerful digital servos and Perfex KT-3HS transmitter round out this ready to run kit.

V-One SR (Intermediate racers)

Here is a good kit to get started in nitro car racing. Duralumin main chassis, 2 bevel gear differential, 2-speed transmission, belt drivetrain, tuned muffler, low center of gravity and high power GXR-15V nitro engine. 

As you skill level improves, the V-One SR can be upgraded to be similar in performance to the high end V-One RRR. As a kit, the V-One SR does not include a radio control system, body, fuel, starter and batteries for radio system.

 V-One RRR Evo.2 (Advanced racers)

This is a kit for advanced racers.  The Kyosho V-One RRR Evo2 is the 2008-2009 IFMAR 1/10 GP on-road world champion. Technical highlights include Duralumin main chassis,  2 speed spur gear, 2 speed clutch shoe, and more.

As a racing kit, typically not included are radio control system, engine, body, fuel, starter and batteries for radio system.

Companies

Popular companies are CEN, HPI, Kyosho, Tamiya, Serpent, Mugen, Traxxas and Team Associated to name a few. And luckily most offer “ready to run” kits, where it is simple charge the transmitter/receiver batteries, put nitro fuel in, then go play or race.

 For Beginners

I would recommend nitro rc cars from Tamiya, Kyosho and HPI as my experience with them is good. Easiest is to go to your local hobby shop, talk to the owner, and he will help you in selling everything you need to get started. Important is to buy a model with plenty of spare parts. Nothing worse than not being able to play because of a broken part.

Advanced Racers

For advanced racers, popular are kits from Kyosho, Serpent and Mugen. Typically there is the 1/10 scale touring car class and the 1/8 scale on-road cars that are the ultimate in the hobby. There are no faster racing machines than 1/8th scale nitro rc cars.
