There are several rc car bodies for the TB03 such as the Xanavi Nismo GT-R (R35), ARTA Garaiya, Takata Dome NSX and ORC Amemiya SGC-7.

Box stock the car is a good performer whether for street running or racing on the track. And if you want to go faster, there are many hop up parts for the Tamiya TB03.

35 MPH

45 MPH

You will need a stronger battery such as a 7.4v LIPO pack.

You will need a modified motor (e.g. 3.5T brushless) or an 8.4v NiMH battery pack.

60 MPH

You will need an 11.1V 3S LiPo battery pack.

Tips

Make sure your car, ESC and motor is capable of accepting this high voltage. Avoid playing in crowded areas, getting hit by a 30mph rc car can cause serious injuries. Safety first.

For beginners, I would suggest staying in the 10 – 20mph speed. Then slowly progress to higher speeds as you feel comfortable and have control over the car. For a beginner to try a 60mph is disastrous, either the car will crash or worse a person will get injured. Safety please.

I have been driving rc cars for over 30 years and still find 40mph too fast. 60mph might sound enticing, but it is a marketing thing, and not good for beginners.

Stay safe.

Probably the biggest rc car company in Japan, Tamiya electric rc cars are popular worldwide. My first true hobby quality rc car was a Tamiya. Today I’ve lost count as to how many I have. I’m just addicted to buying them.

If you are a beginner, I highly recommend you start off with a Tamiya rc car. Here is a quick guide.

Tamiya TT01 (for beginners)

This is the entry level model of Tamiya aimed for beginners. I have one, it’s actually good for playing and bashing. Plus the various body kits (Mazdas, Nissans, Mitsubishis, BMWs etc) give you the looks you want.

Photo of Tamiya TT01 rc car.

Basic specs: friction shocks, shaft drive, gear diffs, plastic tub chassis, decent suspension, slightly heavier than other models.

Tamiya TA05 (best value, beginner to intermediate racers)

I find the TA05 to be the best value Tamiya rc touring car. Reason is good suspension design, good weight balance, oil shock absorbers, efficient belt drivetrain and very durable.

Tamiya TA05 rc car.

Even if you are a beginner, I would highly recommend you buy the TA05 over the TT01. Out of the box the TA05 has a race designed suspension geometry and chassis balance. Even if you hop up a TT01 to it’s fullest it will not beat the design of the TA05.

Tamiya TRF 416 (for serious racers)

To show how good Tamiya kits are, they are probably the only manufacturer to win 3 touring car world championships using their 414, 415 and 416 rc touring car kits. Tamiya is serious about racing and have their Tamiya Racing Factory (TRF) group. If you see a Tamiya kit with the TRF branding, it is for serious racing.

Tamiya TRF 416 rc car.

Typical specs include graphite chassis, TRF oil filled shocks, efficient belt drive system, ball differentials, superior suspension design for fastest cornering speeds.

So I hope you like Tamiya rc cars as much as I do. Very popular in Asia, USA and Europe. They also have a yearly Tamiya World Championship race wherein regular folks like us can have a chance to become a World Champion.

Have fun!

Hi and welcome to the electric rc cars page. Hope the tips and resources here will help you get started and enjoy the hobby for a long time. Let’s begin.

For Beginners

Most of my electric powered rc cars are from a company called Tamiya. I like their models, realistic and easy to assemble. And if you do not like assembling, Tamiya has ready to run (RTR) models.

HPI is another company I like, their radio control cars are very durable. Their ready to run kits are good out of the box. And if you later want to race, their sister company HotBodies sells racing level kits.

Team Associated is very popular in the USA. In the early days well known for 1/12th scale on road, they also have some electric on road kits such as the TCx series of models.

Getting Started

Electric rc cars have a few items you need to buy: 1) the car, 2) radio control transmitter/servo, 3) electronic speed control, 4) 7.2v battery pack for the car, 5) peak battery charger for the 7.2v battery pack, and 6) 8-AA sized batteries for the transmitter.

Items you need to buy with electric rc cars.

Companies sometimes sell kits only (no motor, speed control, battery). Some kits have motor, speed control but no battery or radio. And some have it all in one box (car, motor, speed control, radio control unit, battery pack). These are commonly called ready to run (i.e. RTR).

I personally started of with “toy” quality cars that are commonly sold in department stores. And I started in 1978, so the quality is not as good as the “toys” sold today. But these toys were the cheapest in the hobby, and served a good purpose of training me how to drive.

Later, my parents bought me my first true hobby quality rc kit, the 1/10 Tamiya Ford Ranger XLT. Had to buy the radio controller, battery and charger separately. This was probably one of the happiest day in my life, and I can still remember going to the shop and buying the kit.

Now I have quite a few in my room and do a bit of racing and sometime even “body kit” painting contest. I enjoy the hobby so much that I enjoy maintaning my RCCartips.com and RCCarsRTR.com website plus my videos on Youtube. As long as it has something to do with RC, I love it.

Hope you browse this site and eventually buy your own kit.

Thanks and have fun!
