In 1/10 electric on-road touring cars, the popular class is usually modified and 13.5T brushless motors. A couple of years ago modified is much faster. However with the new technology such as faster speed controllers (LRP SXX, Tekin, Advanced Black Diamond) and 50c LIPO batteries, stock touring is almost as fast as modified.
Take for example the recent 2010 DHI Cup. Here are the winning times in the A main of modified and pro-stock class.

Mod vs stock DHI cup 2010 results
In both race times and fastest times, stock is only 5% slower than modified. And probably only 2 to 3% slower if the modified drivers (professionals) were driving stock.
Maybe someday stock will be faster than modified
